The Islands of the Bahamas is a place to go
and forget all about reality and start living the dream. There are
more than 700 islands of the Bahamas which cover more than 100,000
square miles of ocean that start just a short 50 miles off the coast
of Florida. The Bahamas has some of the clearest waters on the
planet, you can see your toes as clear as the world's third largest
barrier reef. The islands have been captivating many people such as
explorers, settlers, traders, and invaders. Even today there are
tales treasures but the the real treasures are the Bahamians
themselves.
It all started in the early times somewhere
between 300 to 400 AD with people who came from what is now called
Cuba. These people just lived on the Islands of The Bahamas and
lived off the ocean for food. It was sometime between 900-1500 when
the Lucayan people settled here. They were the ones that enjoyed the
peaceful way of living as well as developed a viable political,
social and religious system. Then in 1492, Christopher Columbus made
landfall on the island of San Salvador. He named the islands as the
islands of "baja mar" which means shallow sea, these islands then
became the Islands of the Bahamas. When Christopher Columbus arrived
there were about 40,000 Lucayans on the island and Christopher
Columbus made them all slaves. Within a short period of 25 years,
all of the Lucayans were wiped out due to the disease of hard labor
and slavery they endured.
In 1649 English Puritans who are also known as
"Eleutheran Adventurers" had arrived to search for religious
freedom. Instead of finding religious freedom, they found food
shortages. Captain William was the one who sailed to the American
Colonies in search for some help, he returned to the islands with
supplies from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. The people on the island
thanked the Massachusetts Bay Colony by sending them brasileto wood.
This contribution helped purchase some land which is now known as
Harvard University. Sometime in the late 1600's and early 1700's a
lot of privateers and pirates come to the islands, the most famous
was Blackbeard and Cailico Jack. There were some female pirates such
as Anne Bonny and Mary Read but they were disguised as men.
The weather and climate on the Islands of the
Bahamas is usually blessed with warm weather year round. During the
winter months the weather usually stay at a comfortable 70 degrees
which consist of September through May. The rest of the year it the
temperature stays at about 80-90 degrees and at night it will
usually drop 5-7 degrees which makes the Bahamas even more
enjoyable. There is unfortunately Hurricane Season which runs from
June to November but this should not stop visitors. The hurricane
reports are usually incorrect and does not affect the islands. The
people of the Bahamas are very laid back and like to say "let's
worry about the bad things tomorrow." They greet everyone with a
warm and welcoming smile and they love to celebrate everything.
